Oona King

Date of birth

22 October 1967

Political profile

Oona King has attracted a lot of attention since her first election to the Commons in 1997.

As an articulate young woman, she represented the modern face of Labour.

Her appearances in the chamber and in the media also confirmed her as an intelligent and witty New Labour loyalist.

She is from the modernising wing of the party, a Fabian and a supporter of electoral reform.

She is openly ambitious and has a strong background in Labour, having worked before her election as a union organiser and an assistant to MEPs including Glenys Kinnock.

However, despite repeatedly being tipped for promotion, she remains on the backbenches.

She is heavily involved in anti-racist movements, both domestically and internationally and is the Commons' authority on Rwanda.

She also often speaks on housing policy.
