Andrew Hunter

Date of birth

8 January 1943

Political profile

In October 2002, Andrew Hunter announced his resignation from the Conservative Party.

This decision allowed him to stand in Lagan Valley for the Democratic Unionist Party in the 2003 Northern Ireland Assembly Elections, but he narrowly failed in his bid to win the seat.

He will serve his Basingstoke constituency until the next General Election, when he will retire from Westminster.

He was one of the few Conservatives who voted against the Good Friday Agreement.

A member of the Orange Order, he has called for the Conservatives and the Ulster Unionist to revive their formal links.

He was obliged by Iain Duncan Smith to resign from the Monday Club in October 2001.

He is very keen on defence issues, having held a commission in the Territorial Army before his election, but his main political interest is in Northern Ireland.
