In pictures: Queen's personal speech
The Queen has made a personally written speech to both Houses of Parliament, to mark her Golden Jubilee year.
She addressed MPs and peers in Westminster Hall - where her mother had lain in state only a few weeks ago.
Westminster Hall was packed with politicians and dignitaries waiting to hear the speech
The Queen looked relaxed as she arrived
The mace - symbol of the Queen in Parliament - was on display but covered as she entered the hall
Trumpeters of the Royal Cavalry sounded a fanfare in front of the memorial window
The Queen was accompanied by only Prince Philip - in contrast to her 1977 speech where several Royals attended
Lord Chancellor Lord Irvine and Commons Speaker Michael Martin gave "humble addresses"
The Queen described the British as "moderate, pragmatic people" and reflected on changes during her reign
It is only the fifth time she has made a personally-written address to Parliament
Former speaker Betty Boothroyd and former prime minister Lady Thatcher were among those listening
The speech comes on the eve of the monarch's 15 week jubilee tour of the UK which begins in Cornwall
