The main points of the 2002 English local elections are as follows:

Headlines

  • Far Right BNP wins a third seat on Burnley council after five recounts

  • Independent Ray "Robocop" Mallon is elected mayor of Middlesbrough with almost three times as many votes as his nearest Labour rival.

  • BNP fails to win seat in Oldham but secures 27% of the vote

  • Hartlepool elects football club mascot H'Angus the Monkey as its mayor

  • Latest figures suggest a 5% increase in turnout nationally on 2000 local elections

  • Areas with postal ballots were up 28%, e-voting was up 5% and online voting up 1%.

    State of the parties

  • Tories gain control of Enfield, in North London

  • Tories lose control of one of only two metropolitan councils they hold, Calderdale in West Yorkshire on a disappointing night

  • Tories gain Adur, Swale, Peterborough and Wokingham, and Enfield

  • Tories lose Cheltenham, Worthing and Eastbourne

  • Labour retain control of Bolton and Wolverhampton, where they were believed to be facing a serious threat

  • Labour lose 20 seats and lose control of former stronghold Hull

  • Labour hold Hastings despite strong Tory challenge

  • Liberal Democrats win control of Kingston-Upon-Thames

  • Liberal Democrats take control of Norwich council from Labour

  • Greens gain 7% of the vote - their highest share since 1998 - but lose four of their seven councillors in Oxford

    Mayoral votes

  • Hackney votes in favour of having an elected mayor

  • Oxford rejects elected mayor

  • Labour wins mayoral election in Doncaster

  • Labour wins mayoral election in Lewisham

  • Lib Dems win mayoral election in Watford

  • Conservatives win the mayoral contest in North Tyneside

    Independents

  • Independents win control of Elmbridge Council

  • Independent Kidderminster Hospital/Health Concern gain Wyre Forest from no overall control
