Northern Ireland police 'mistakenly' patrol Republic

Police officer

The Northern Ireland police force has admitted its officers patrolled and mounted a checkpoint in the Republic of Ireland last week.

Last Monday they stopped cars in County Donegal, just across the border from Belleek in County Fermanagh.

The police said the officers immediately withdrew when they were made aware they had crossed the border.

They said the officers involved were not familiar with the Fermanagh/Donegal border area.
