A senior Derry Sinn Fein press officer has said he has received a death threat from the Real IRA.

Dale Moore said police officers visited his home at about 1840 GMT on Thursday and told him they had intelligence that the Real IRA intended to shoot him.

Mr Moore said he wants Real IRA and the 32 County Sovereignty Movement to say why this threat was issued.

"Obviously you have to take the threat seriously given the happenings in Derry over the past month or so."

Mr Moore said he intends to step up his security arrangements.

In a statement the PSNI said they were unable to comment the threat.

"We do not discuss the security of individuals, where we believe that anyone needs to review their security we take the appropriate steps to inform them.

"We never ignore anything which may put an individual at risk."
