29-year-old man shot in both legs

Police in Derry have appealed for information about the shooting

A 29-year-old man has been shot in both legs in Londonderry.

The man was discovered behind the Creggan shops at about 1840 GMT on Tuesday.

He was brought to hospital where his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Police are investigating what may have motivated the shooting and have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.

A man who heard the shots said he thought he would find a dead man.

"I heard a few shots. I heard the awful screaming," he said.

"Then I heard about five or six shots after that. I thought I was going to go out and see a young fella lying dead in the lane.

"But he was awake, quite aware of what was going on and said he was shot twice in the leg."
