A patient has been treated for swine flu in Londonderry in what is believed to be the first case in the city.

Altnagelvin Hospital said they treated the patient - who has now been discharged - with antivirals earlier this week.

The patient had recently returned from holiday in Portugal.

Geraldine Hillick, the Western Trust's assistant director of emergency care, said all necessary steps were taken to protect the public's health.

"All precautions have been taken, and the proper public protection equipment was worn and is available.

"The patient came in contact with a minimal number of patients and all of those were treated with antivirals.

"The staff were also advised and treated," she said.

As of 1 July, the Department of Health has confirmed 34 cases of swine flu in Northern Ireland.
