Woman 'leaving' after mob attack

Bishop's Gate
The attack happened in the Fountain estate on Tuesday

A woman who was forced to flee her home after a sectarian attack in Londonderry has said she wants to leave NI.

On Tuesday, a gang in the mainly Protestant Fountain estate threatened to kill her and her Catholic friends.

The victim, who does not want to be named, is originally from England and had only moved into the house in Aubrey Street a week ago.

"I was on the phone to the police and the windows were being smashed," said the woman.

"I was trapped outside but I managed to get back into the flat.

"I said to my friends just get upstairs because the police had said to stay inside because it was safer.

"They were questioning this, and I said the best bet was just to do what they said."

The woman said she and her friends then went upstairs and locked themselves in the bathroom of the house.

"We were phoning the police, friends, anyone who could come up and help us," she said.
