Recycling sites to be reopened

Derry City Councillors have agreed to reverse their decision to close amenity sites at Brandywell and Eglinton.

Ratepayers protested outside the dumps earlier this year when it was announced they were to be closed to save money.

Councillors will hold a special meeting to discuss the schedule for re-opening the sites. They hope it can be passed before the summer recess.

Sinn Fein Councillor Maeve McLaughlin said the meeting had to be arranged "with a degree of urgency".

"We have instructed the town clerk now to convene a special council meeting, which is the meeting which will be required to authorise the reopening of the two sites.

"I do agree that throughout this process people have felt left out of the loop.

"What we need to do now is make sure that the meeting which will authorise the reopening takes place as soon as possible," she said.
