Mr Clifford says people are handing their legally-held guns in to the police

Residents in the Creggan area of Londonderry are handing in legally-held guns because they are afraid they will be stolen, a local councillor has said.

SDLP councillor Jim Clifford said masked men stole five licensed firearms from a house in the area two weeks ago.

"People have approached me and they've said they are going to hand the guns to the proper authorities," he said.

"They want no more hassle with people breaking into their homes and terrifying their families."
