The man and woman who died in a house fire in County Donegal on Thursday have been named locally as Marie Galvin, 57, and 62-year-old Declan Scully.

The blaze broke out at a rural house in Killygordon near Stranorlar some time before 2200 GMT on Thursday.

An investigation is underway to determine how the fire started.

Friends and relatives gathered at the scene on Friday to pay their respects. Garda sergeant Alan Cunningham said the local community was in shock.

"This is a very closely-knit community here.

"People are shocked and saddened to think of the loss of life in the circumstances," he said.

District Fire Commander with the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, Willie Lynch, said the emergency services received a call from a neighbour on Thursday and it was feared the occupants were still in the house.

"Unfortunately, the house was well alight when we arrived. The roof had collapsed in and all efforts to search for the people were hampered because of the state of the house," he said.
