Almost £2m will be spent on the renovation of the church
Almost £2m has been approved for the renovation of First Derry Presbyterian Church.
The building, on the city's Upper Magazine Street, was closed six years ago because of dry rot.
The congregation secured funding from the tourist board and other agencies to refurbish the place of worship.
The church's minister, the Reverend David Latimer, said it was great news. "Santa has come early for First Derry", he said.
"I was delighted on Sunday past in front of a full church to be able to send them out with a spring in their step and tell them that I had received a long-awaited letter of offer.
"The wait has been rewarded, and the work we can look forward to seeing started in the spring of 2009."
