Homeless 'will die' this winter

Street drinkers living rough in Londonderry will die this winter unless something is done, a police inspector has warned.

Homeless people are living rough under duvets in the John Street area of the city.

Inspector Paul Deacon said that one homeless person had already died from hypothermia in the city.

"This is a problem that raises its head every year, but nothing seems to be done," he said.

"Just over two weeks ago one of the local street drinkers passed away.

"He had been sleeping rough in public toilets, and as far as I know he died with hypothermia.

"It is an ongoing problem in the city," he said.
