Sewer smell blamed for city alert

Bishop's Gate, Derry
People were evacuated from the Bishop Street area

Bishop Street in the centre of Londonderry has reopened after a suspected gas leak.

A number of buildings were evacuated at about 1300 GMT on Wednesday after the fire service received reports of possible gas leaks at three premises.

The area between Bishop Street and the Diamond was cordoned off for a time, but has now reopened.

The Fire and Rescue Service said a smell from nearby sewers was to blame for the alert.
