A man in his late 20s is critically ill in hospital after he was stabbed in Letterkenny in County Donegal.

He was stabbed several times at an apartment complex in the town at about 0700 BST on Thursday.

A 34-year-old man was arrested and is being questioned by gardai. Part of Lower Main Street has been sealed off for forensic examination.

Local councillor Dessie Larkin said people were "shocked" by the "very serious" incident.

"Our thoughts are with the young man and his family, and we hope that the young man pulls through.

"This was an isolated incident, but we hope we don't see any replication of this type of incident in Letterkenny," he said.
