Five questioned over town murder

Five people are still being questioned by police investigating the murder of a man in Dungannon, County Tyrone.

Eamonn Hughes, 48, was stabbed in the Lisnahull estate early on Saturday, after leaving his daughter's 18th birthday party.

It is understood two women who tried to help him were hit by a stolen taxi. A man, believed to be the victim's son, was shot in the arm with a crossbow.

Three people have been released on bail, pending further reports.

The police said they want to hear from witnesses to the attack, including anyone who saw a beige taxi in Lisnahull Road which was later found burnt out.

"This was a vicious attack and a despicable crime, a family is having to deal with the loss of a loved one," said Supt Brian Williamson.

"We are determined to bring all those responsible for this heinous crime before the courts."

Mr Hughes' father, Francis, was killed by loyalists 18 years ago.

Neighbours described Eamonn Hughes as a "generous family man" involved in fundraising for his local community.
