Residents defend homes from flood

Flash floods in Derry in 2004
Derry city centre was badly flooded in 2004.

Residents of a Londonderry housing estate had to put down sandbags and open drains to stop their homes from being flooded on Tuesday afternoon.

Heavy rain led to flooding in the Coshquin area.

Homeowner Sean O'Reilly said it was the fourth time the area had flooded, and if nothing is done the houses will be submerged.

Roads Service said the housing development is private and it is not responsible for the road through it.

Sean O'Reilly said he was angry the problem still hasn't been addressed.

"We'd be better off with a boat than a car.

"As well as the flooding at the front of the house, at the back there's a large retaining wall and it's coming down there like a waterfall.

"My partner and my son had to go to her mother's house, there's no way you could bring a child into that.

"It's soul-destroying. We moved in here two and a half years ago, and we paid big money for a house, and this isn't what we bargained for," he said.
