City floods after torrential rain

Waters of up to two-feet deep caused havoc for motorists

A clean-up operation is under way in Londonderry after a road subsided during torrential rain on Wednesday.

Rossdowney Road in the Waterside was badly damaged in the downpour and NI Water said two properties were flooded.

Raw sewage ran along the Limavady Road and, at one stage, drivers had to negotiate up to 2ft of water.

One resident said flooding was an ongoing problem in the area:"There was a torrent of water running down the street and into my driveway," he said.

"There's obviously a serious problem here and they're going to have do something about it."

Northern Ireland Water said it was investing heavily to improve its service in Derry.

"NI Water is investing over £15m in the Derry area through various projects to upgrade existing infrastructure and reduce the risk of flooding in the city," said a spokesman.

Dennis Wilson from Roads Service said the rain caused widespread problems.

"The sewage system and the road drainage system were totally overwhelmed by the amount of rain," he said.

"As soon as we were aware there was a problem on Rossdowney Road we had a supervisor out to assess the amount of damage."
