A member of staff has been suspended at a care home in Eglinton over the alleged abuse of a resident.

Southern Cross Healthcare, which operates Longfield Care Centre, said the claim was acted on immediately.

"The health and safety of our residents is paramount. This is now in the hands of the police and we will fully co-operate with them," it said.

PSNI confirmed they are investigating a report of abuse at the centre which was brought to their attention on 7 July.

The care home on Longfield Road is a 46-bed, purpose-built facility for both the elderly and young physically disabled people.
