A teenage mother has appeared in court charged with perverting the course of justice in relation to the murder of Emmett Shiels in Londonderry.

Nadine Kelly, 18, of Celandine Court in the Waterside, is accused of providing a false alibi for an 18-year-old.

The defendant denies the charge and was released on bail.

A PSNI officer told the court tensions were running high and the homes of other people arrested in connection with the murder have been attacked.

Ms Kelly's solicitor said she had no involvement in the murder and her involvement in the alleged alibi offence stemmed from a romantic attachment.

She was ordered not to have any contact with five men named in court, and not to enter the Bogside and Creggan areas.

Meanwhile, officers investigating Mr Shiels' death have been given more time to question three male youths aged 16, 17 and 18.

A 16-year-old girl was arrested in Derry in connection with the killing on Wednesday evening.

Mr Shiels, from Tyrconnell Street in the Bogside, was shot in the Bligh's Lane area at about 0045 BST on Tuesday June 24.

He was driving a pizza delivery van when he was caught up in a confrontation with a group of masked gunmen.
