Irish-medium high school to close

Caitriona Ruane
The Education Minister has agreed to the closure

The Irish-Medium unit in St Brigid's College, Derry, is to be phased out from September 2008.

Education Minister Caitríona Ruane has agreed to the closure at Carnhill, but said the decision was regrettable.

"Despite the best endeavours of Coláiste Bhride and the Council for Catholic Maintained Schools, the provison will be phased out.

"Intakes have been small and with no prospect of recovery it is in pupils' best interests if the unit is closed."

There will be no Year 8 entry in September and pupils remaining in the unit will continue to be taught through Irish language until the end of Year 12.
