The child's body was found off the Portaferry Road, close to Mount Stewart, in an area known locally as the Old Gasworks.

A post mortem examination carried out on the body indicated there were several injuries.

The police said they were concerned for the welfare of the baby's mother and appealed to her to seek medical help.
