Inquiry into Wright corpse photos
Billy Wright was murdered in the Maze prison
Billy Wright was murdered in the Maze prison in 1997
The police have said photographs circulating of murdered Loyalist Volunteer Force leader Billy Wright's corpse did not come from RUC files.

Wright, who split from the Ulster Volunteer Force in Portadown to form his new loyalist paramilitary splinter group, was murdered by the republican Irish National Liberation Army while serving an eight year sentence in the Maze prison in 1997.

A police spokesman told BBC News Online that because the RUC had only been handed photocopies of the pictures, any further investigations into their source would be difficult.

Asked whether the photographs appeared to have come from an offical source he said: "This matter has been the subject of an investigation.

"All we can say is that the photographs in police possession are still secure."

He added that there could be a number of possible sources of the photographs. For example, they had been distributed "within the legal profession" for use in proceedings, he said.

Billy Wright's father David believes that his son's murder was the result of a conspiracy, and is involved in a campaign to uncover details of how the murder was carried out in the high security prison near Belfast.

An inquest into Wright's killing in 1999, concluded it had been carried out by three INLA men in an elaborate premeditated and pre-planned attack.

He was shot as he sat in the back of a prison van.

His killers managed to smuggle two handguns into the prison and were able to climb out of their prison block and over a roof before jumping into the yard where the van was parked.
