Armagh student Natasha McShane who is seriously ill after being beaten with a baseball bat, is out of a coma.

Natasha, 23, from Silverbridge, was in a drug-induced coma after she was attacked on a night out in Chicago.

A statement from Northwestern Memorial Hospital, said she remains in a serious condition and is showing "limited" brain activity.

It also said doctors have relieved the pressure in her brain and taken her off coma-inducing medication.

"She is awake, but still only demonstrating limited brain activity," the statement said.

"Although her movements are 'uncontrolled' at the moment, the family is hopeful for additional encouraging signs".

The family has extended their thanks and appreciation for the show of "support, generosity and prayers," the statement continued.

Miss McShane and her friend Stacy Jurich, 24, were attacked from behind and struck on the back of their heads by a robber using a baseball bat on their way home from a night out last month.
