Controlled explosion on pipe bomb in north Belfast

Police

Army bomb experts have carried out a controlled explosion on a pipe bomb found in north Belfast on Friday afternoon.

Police said the device, which was made safe, was "viable".

Shops in the Etna Drive area near Alliance Avenue were closed and residents told to stay indoors during the alert.

Police commander Andrew Freeburn thanked those who had been disrupted for their patience.
