Neighbours of the 24-year-old man shot in the leg in Londonderry have expressed their shock and condemnation.

Three masked men forced their way into a house at Cable Street in the Bogside area at about 2200 BST.

One went to an upstairs bedroom and fired a number of shots, none of which hit the man.

A neighbour, who did not want to be identified, said he was a quiet man: "A fella that bothers nobody. They are a quiet family, they keep to themselves."

"It's sickening that they can come in, kick your door in and walk in and just do what they want to do," she continued.

"I don't know what type of world it's coming to. It's terrible, it's fear, sickening in the stomach."

A second masked man went upstairs and shot the victim once in the back of his right leg. The gang ran off through the back door. The victim's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Police have appealed for information.

Dissident republicans have been behind a spate of shootings in Derry in recent months.
