Businessman chosen as Meehan council replacement

A businessman has been co-opted to Newtownabbey Borough Council to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Sinn Fein councillor Briege Meehan.

Glengormley businessman Brendan Carlin was nominated by the Alliance Party.

Mrs Meehan, the wife of late prominent republican Martin Meehan, stepped down from the council after being suspended from Sinn Fein.

Alliance group leader Tom Campbell said there had been unanimous agreement to co-opt Mr Carlin.

He claimed that Sinn Fein had failed to put forward a possible candidate for co-option and the alternative option of a by-election would have cost ratepayers £30,000.
