Gerry Adams was told of the threat by Security Minister Paul Goggins

Sinn Fein has said its leader Gerry Adams has been told that an attack against him is "a strong possibility".

It said Mr Adams was told by Security Minister Paul Goggins that an "up to date assessment" indicated the threat level against him was "substantial".

Mr Adams said: "Those responsible for these threats have nothing to offer the people of Ireland.

"They have no strategies or political programmes and want to turn the clock back to conflict."

He said that neither he, nor the Sinn Fein leadership, would be intimidated or frightened.
