The Green Party has selected Councillor Cadogan Enright to contest the South Down seat at the next general election.

Councillor Enright, who is a member of Down District Council, said he was "delighted to have been chosen".

"I believe that the current economic downturn can be overcome with huge social and environmental benefits in South Down.

"In County Down, we have over 1,300 manufacturing jobs in Green industries," he said.

Last week, the South Down MP, Eddie McGrady, said he would not be standing in the upcoming general election.

The SDLP representative is stepping down from the seat he has represented at Westminster since 1987.
