Security alert at Belfast station a hoax

The railway line between Central Station and Great Victoria Street in Belfast has reopened.

It was closed after police received reports that a suspicious object had been left close to the railway line at Botanic Station in south Belfast.

The line was closed from about 0200 GMT on Friday until shortly after 1200 GMT.

Police have said the alert was a hoax. A number of rail services were affected, including the Enterprise service to Dublin.

South Belfast assembly member Alex Maskey said those responsible for the hoax needed to "get real".

"They are serving the interest of nobody and are only causing massive disruption to the local community," he said.

"Disruption made all the worse because of the large numbers of people trying to prepare for Christmas."
