Child poverty worse than before

Mother and child

Parents on low incomes who care for disabled children are struggling more than was previously thought, two charities have claimed.

Save the Children and the Family Fund said research showed one in three disabled children living in poverty.

The report added that almost half of children living in a family with a disabled adult are in poverty.

Eddie Casement from the Family Fund said their needs had "so far slipped under the radar".

"Some parents have described to us that they feel they are living on a knife-edge," he said.

"That would be both parents who are not working, who are receiving benefits and also parents who are in work.

"From research we know that it's up to three times more expensive to bring up a child with a disability."
