Concerns over bridge structure

Firefighters at the scene
The road was cordoned off while engineers worked on the fault

A major gas leak in south Belfast which caused more than 50 homes to be evacuated has been repaired.

Part of the Ormeau Road was cordoned off after a fire under the Ormeau Bridge caused a mains gas pipe to rupture on Monday night.

Phoenix Gas said their engineers had repaired the fault. However, there were concerns about the structure of the bridge.

It was not certain if it would be re-opened before rush hour on Tuesday.

A strong smell of gas was reported in the area as gas spilled out of the pipes.

Residents were advised to close all doors and windows and to extinguish all naked flames outside.
