A long-standing SDLP councillor has died. Ignatius Fox, who represented Portadown on Craigavon Borough Council, died at the weekend.

SDLP Leader Mark Durkan paid tribute to a man who "represented his community with determination and distinction".

"He stood on the democratic frontline in the worst of troubled times," said Mr Durkan.

"He held the line for non-violence, justice, power-sharing and constitutional nationalism."

Mr Durkan sent his condolences to Mr Fox's family.

"Ignatius gave himself to public life when there was little or no personal reward and the worst possible pressures, discouragements and frustrations as violence and intransigence locked us in conflict," he added.

"Through all those bad times he stood up for a better way in an area that suffered some of the worst examples of violence and sectarianism from various quarters."
