Derryman in Berlin Wall concert

It was a night to remember the wall coming down.

A man from Londonderry took centre stage on Monday as world leaders joined thousands of people to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Johnny McDaid performed "We Are The One" along with the Berlin-born DJ and producer, Paul Van Dyk.

But despite all the hype and the millions of people watching, there was a hint of the familiar about the scene.

"I brought my mum and dad over. It felt a bit like I was in a school play and they were out there in the audience," he said.

Mr McDaid said it was the "biggest gig" he had ever played and the atmosphere was amazing.

"Just to look out and see the people in the streets for miles and miles - people turned out in their millions to take part."

He and his friend, Mr Van Dyk, wrote the song in the summer-time. When it came to performing it live, he even tried to speak a little German.

"I don't know whether I had a John F Kennedy moment, but I tried," he said.

And the temperature outside may have been chilly, but the atmosphere more than made up for that.

"There was so much energy and positivity. It was a great honour for me to be there," he said.

As well as the millions on the streets, about 700 TV channels from around the world covered the concert.

Mr McDaid performed alongside a line-up that included Bon Jovi and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

"I didn't expect Bon Jovi would be opening up for the likes of me," he said.
