Fines for illegal fuel drivers

Twenty one motorists have been caught using illegal fuel during a HM Revenue and Customs detection operation in County Down.

Over £10,000 of fines have been imposed on the drivers who were stopped at a number of roadside checkpoints in the Newry area on Wednesday.

They were all using red, green or illicit diesel in their fuel tanks.

A customs spokesman said fuel fraud "cheats citizens and neighbours out of vital funding for public services".
