A 23-year-old man has been taken to hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg after he was attacked in north Belfast on Monday night.

Police said the man was bundled into a small red van on Ardoyne Avenue by two men wearing balaclavas.

He was then driven to an entry off Highbury Gardens where he was shot once in the lower right leg.

His attackers are believed to have made off along Berwick Road. The incident was reported shortly after 1930 BST.

Police have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area around this time or anyone with information to contact them on 0845 600 8000.

SDLP North Belfast MLA Alban Maginness condemned the shooting.

"This is a retrospect step back to a time we want to leave behind. Nobody has the right to inflict any kind of physical harm on another individual.

"I hope those responsible are quickly brought to justice and a message is sent out to other thugs still stuck in the past that they will go to jail for their actions."
