Blaze threatens nurse apartments

Nurses were evacuated from the nearby residential tower block

A fire in west Belfast has led to traffic disruption and residents of a block of flats being evacuated.

Nurses living in Broadway Towers in west Belfast had to leave their apartments when the fire broke out at a nearby derelict building.

Broadway was closed to traffic at the Falls Road and Iveagh Street while fire crews fought the blaze.

The road at the Broadway entrance to the Royal Victoria Hospital will be closed until later on Wednesday.

District commander John Langtry said the fire was well alight when crews arrived.

"Our main concerns are to ensure we have full evacuation of Broadway Towers and that we have got enough water on the fire to stop it spreading any further," he said.
