A man and woman who died in a road accident in County Down last week, were from Scotland the Police Service of Northern Ireland have said.

Former Central Scotland Police officer Ronald Malloy, 59, and his wife Jean, 61, from Bannockburn, died when their car hit a lorry on the hard shoulder.

It happened on the A1 Newry Road between Loughbrickland and Newry at about 1330 BST on Friday.

Police have appealed for any witnesses to the crash to contact them.

It is understood Mr Malloy had spent over 25 years as a traffic policeman and latterly had been working for the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency, (Vosa).

No-one was in the lorry at the time of the accident.
