Jordan McConomy describes what happened to him

An 11-year-boy sustained burns to his face and hands during an incident in Londonderry on Monday night.

Jordan McConomy said he was coming home from the shops in the Rossnagalliagh area when flammable liquid was thrown onto burning rubbish by another youth.

His mother, Andrena McConomy, said her son ran into the house screaming so she asked him what was wrong.

"He said my face is burnt and then he started running the cold water and splashing it on his face," she said.

Ms McConomy said her son was on his way back from the shop when he stopped at the fire.

"He said he just saw a big blue flash in front of him, somebody had thrown something in, and it blew up in his face."

Fire service station commander Paul Coyle said it was a "reckless act".

"The crew treated the youngster with our own treatment for burns and the paramedics were tasked," he said.

"But it's transpired that one of the youngsters at the scene had actually thrown a flammable liquid of some sort onto the fire.

"The result of that was that it came up around the wee boy and that's how he sustained his burns."
