Soldier son of ex-mayor improves

The son of former Belfast Lord Mayor Bob Stoker who was seriously injured in an explosion in Afghanistan is now out of critical care.

Michael Stoker, a Queen's Royal Hussars soldier, was injured in Helmand Province last month.

The 22-year-old's vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device.

Mr Stoker said: "He is sitting up talking to the family. He is obviously still in a lot of pain but the doctors are well pleased with his progress."

"The family would like to thank everybody for their prayers and good wishes.

"This news is terrific for us, for Michael and for all concerned."

Two other soldiers were also injured.
