Five hurt in overnight hotel fire

Four Ways Hotel
Forty firefighters were sent to tackle the blaze

Five people have been treated for the effects of inhaling smoke after a fire at a former hotel in County Tyrone.

Four police officers and a man who lived in a flat at the Four Ways Hotel in Fivemiletown were injured.

The blaze started just before 0300 BST on Saturday. A passing police patrol went in and led one man to safety.

No guests were staying in the hotel which was operating as a bar. Eight appliances and 40 firefighters helped bring the blaze under control.

Fire commander Robbie Bryson said: "We had difficulty getting across to the fire because it was in the middle of the building.

"We requested a hydraulic platform to put over the roof and we had more success with putting out the fire. Even so, there was extensive damage to the central portion of the hotel."
