Eight-year-old dies of meningitis

A rash is one of the symptoms of meningitis

An eight-year-old girl from County Down has died in hospital from meningitis, it has emerged.

The child became ill on Wednesday afternoon but died on Thursday.

Pupils at St Colmcille's Primary School in Downpatrick where the girl attended have received injections to immunise them against infection.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord.
