A 31-year-old man has been jailed for five years for trying to smuggle £300,000 worth of cocaine into Northern Ireland by swallowing it.

David Ugochukwu, from Blarney Street, Cork, was arrested by Customs officers after arriving at Belfast International Airport from Amsterdam in August 2008.

He was taken to a nearby hospital and a total of 46 packages containing nearly 629 grams of cocaine were recovered.

It is understood the cocaine was more than 70% pure.

John Whiting, of HMRC, said: "Criminals dealing in illegal drugs are thinking solely of profit and show utter disregard for the damage drugs do to individuals and communities.

"HMRC continues to work with the police and other law enforcement agencies, such as the UK Border Agency, to protect the public from the significant and damaging effect drugs have on our communities."
