Ballymoney has paid tribute to its most famous king of the roads.

Hundreds of fans turned out to cheer motorcycle racer Joey Dunlop, fresh from an amazing twenty sixth TT win on the Isle of Man.

The 48-year-old rider scored three class wins at the Isle of Man TT this year bringing his career total to 26.

On Wednesday night, he completed a lap of honour around his home town on an open top bus before a civic reception.

Sports minister pays tribute

But he said the celebration did not mark the end of his glittering career.

"I want to keep on going, I had a really good TT and I could not ask for anything better than this tonight," he said.

Sports minister Michael McGimpsey also joined the celebrations in Ballymoney town hall.

The minster paid tribute to Mr Dunlop both as a sportsman and for his charity work in Romania and the Balkans.

He said: "This man's achievements in his chosen sport over the last 25 years are legendary and he is idolised by his fans everywhere he goes.

"There can hardy be anyone in Northern Ireland who has not heard of Joey Dunlop and knows what he does.

"Seldom can a sportsman draw so much support from right across the community and this sense of togetherness which he instils through sport can only help Northern Ireland as we seek to build a brighter future for everyone."
