A shop worker has been threatened at gunpoint during an armed robbery in Londonderry.

The incident happened at about 1915 GMT on Friday in premises at Racecourse Road in the Shantallow area.

A police spokesperson said a man armed with a handgun threatened a female member of staff before making off with a sum of money.

It is understood the robber made his escape on foot by jumping over a small wall at the front of the shop.

Councillor Shaun Gallagher, who is also a member of the district policing partnership, condemned the incident.

He said the shop provided a service to the community, adding: "They provide local employment and it's an attack on our community."
