SDLP leader Mark Durkan has attacked the DUP and Sinn Féin calling them "smug parties in a snug power pact".

He told his party's annual conference in Armagh that the SDLP would challenge them in Europe on what he called their "poor record and a bad budget".

"In this new regime, they strut and boast their power status, only to plead that they are powerless on the issues besetting our economy," he said.

"They are giving a screensaver government."

Alban Maginness, the SDLP's European candidate, is hoping to win back the seat once held by former party leader John Hume.

He delivered an impassioned address to Saturday's conference, calling for an end to sectarian headcounts and arguments about who is going to top the poll.

What matters, he said, is who is pro and anti-Europe.
