Review of inmate's call for help

Maghaberry Prison

The Samaritans is to review what happened when an agitated prisoner tried to contact the charity more than 70 times before he took his own life.

Colin Bell's suicide in Maghaberry last year prompted a Prisoner Ombudsman report into failures by staff.

The report also found Bell tried to contact the Samaritans 73 times in just over 24 hours, but 63 went through to an engaged tone.

Suzanne Costello of the Samaritans said they wanted to "identify the problem".

"We're anxious to work in this area to try and make a difference but, as a result of this report, we see that there has been a problem here," she said.

"We'd like to try and identify it and resolve it as soon as possible."
