Test results due on Irish herds

Cow

Tests on more than 50 beef herds across Ireland exposed to contaminated feed are not expected to finish until the end of the week.

Around 40 of the herds are in the Republic, where so far three have shown above legal limits of PCB chemicals.

The Irish government and the Northern Ireland Executive have said beef and dairy products are safe to consume.

Processing of pork has resumed in Northern Ireland but is still suspended in the Republic where processors are demanding a compensation package from the government.

Negotiations involving the taoiseach and the Irish Farmers' Association went on for 13 hours on Tuesday and were continuing on Wednesday.
