Man is injured in hatchet attack

Police tape

A man has been taken to hospital after being attacked with a hatchet in Downpatrick.

He sustained an ear injury as a result of the attack in the John Street area that happened shortly before 0030 GMT on Sunday.

Police said his injury was not life-threatening. A 34-year-old woman also suffered a hand injury as she tried to intervene.

Police said a 24-year-old man had been arrested for questioning.
